THE kidnapped husband of the University of Uyo Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Memfin Ekpo, has regained his freedom 18 days after he was whisked away by unknown gunmen. Ekpo’s wife, Prof. Comfort, is the vice-chancellor of UNIUYO.
Ekpo, an Associate Professor of Pathology, was seized by gunmen on January 16, 2011 around 11am during a church service at the Goodness Evangelical Team, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
His abductors reportedly drove in a deep green Audi 80 car with registration number AQ 236 CAL, to the church.
A source at the University of Uyo confirmed the release of Ekpo from the kidnappers’ detention on Thursday.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said that Ekpo regained his freedom late in the night of Wednesday. When asked if any ransom was paid, the source explained that he was not in the position to know if the family members paid ransom to the kidnappers.
The source said, “I am delighted to inform you that Dr. Ekpo was released last night (Wednesday).”
When contacted, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sani Magaji, said that he could not comment on the development because he was in Abuja at the time our correspondent called him.
“I am not in town. I am in Abuja. I am not in Uyo and nobody has given me that information. I am coming back to the state tomorrow,” Magaji said,
Efforts to get the vice-chancellor’s comment, on the development proved abortive as she said she was no willing to speak on the matter.
